Description

Why are remote meetings more fatiguing than face-to-face-ones? Why do we so often struggle in understanding others, in feeling close and connected, in being creative together, and in just having a normal conversation when there are screens between us?

The reasons for the challenges of online collaboration are becoming elucidated in contemporary science. Many arise from the architecture of our neural and psychophysiological interaction mechanisms, and how these mechanisms function (or don’t) online.

If left unattended, problems of online collaboration can easily accumulate, and become visible as decreased motivation, innovation and effectiveness. Luckily, there are many things that can help.

This 2-day course is designed for teams that work together and who are interested in finding better science-based ways of improving their collaboration.

We will help your team overcome current challenges of online collaboration and understand how to prevent them in the future.

Outcomes

After Remote Teamwork your team will:

  • Feel more connected, collaborate more effectively, and understand each other better online
  • Understand the neural mechanisms that help us connect, and how and why they are challenged online
  • Know how to develop skills that underlie good online collaboration
  • Be able to choose the right technologies for different communication needs and interaction goals
  • Have methods for leading their own remote work to ensure engagement, wellbeing and cognitive fitness

Target group

Remote Teamwork is designed for teams that collaborate online at least sometimes. You can be from any field of business, or from any type of organization. We always interview our teams before training to ensure that the course contents match your specific needs.

Course structure

Day 1. The why and how of human interaction
  • The evolution and neuroscience of interaction
    • Why are humans hyper-social?
    • What is interaction on the level of the brain?
    • How do you get from mere interaction to collaboration?
  • The different purposes and media of interaction
    • When do we need interaction, who should be involved, and what is the right tool to use?
    • How to recognize interaction needs in different settings and choose media accordingly?
    • How to organize remote work (your work environment, the tools you select, and your work routines) in a way that inhibits information overload, and supports wellbeing and cognitive fitness?
Day 2. How to improve online collaboration?
  • The mechanisms of online collaboration
    • Why is online collaboration different from face-to-face collaboration?
    • How do different interaction technologies allow or inhibit our collaborative mechanisms?
  • Designing and tweaking online collaboration
    • What is the desired end-state of your team’s collaboration and how to get there?
    • What to do in situations where you notice a dip in interaction quality?
    • Creating your own handbook for digital teamwork

Methodology

Remote Teamwork will take place over Zoom, and utilize our proprietary software for exercises. The two training days contain interactive sessions, short expert lectures and Q&As, as well as assignments for your team to complete.
